Isabel Allende werd in 1942 uit Chileense ouders geboren in de Peruaanse hoofdstad Lima. In 1945 scheidden haar ouders en keerde haar moeder terug naar Chili met haar drie kinderen. Van 1953 tot 1958 woonde Isabel eerst in Bolivia en vervolgens in Libanon. In 1958 keerde zij terug naar Chili en maakte er de middelbare school af. Zij ontmoette daar haar latere echtgenoot Miguel FrÃas, met wie ze twee kinderen zou krijgen. Vanaf 1967 werkte ze onder meer voor een feministisch vrouwenblad; ze publiceerde talrijke artikelen, kinderboeken en toneelstukken, en verzorgde verschillende televisieprogramma’s. Na de militaire staatsgreep in 1973, waarbij haar oom, president Salvador Allende, de dood vond, vestigde ze zich met haar gezin in Venezuela.
